What is this?
This is the newsletter companion to the Photo Stealers blog. If you’re unfamiliar - it is a blog that lists photographers, or fauxtographers, who use others copyrighted works to represent their own body of work.
Why?
Look, doing this ~waves hands around~ isn’t easy or for the faint of heart. It also isn’t free. I have spent countless thousands of dollars not only running the blog but also paying for the legal fees I incur due to it.
I have run a couple successful Go Fund Mes which did put a dent in what I’ve had to personally cover on my own but I can’t rely on handouts and I hate not giving something back for money I’m getting.
I ran a Patreon for a while but it never felt like quite the right fit for me.
Over the past 12 years, every time I run into someone that knows about what I do, I’m most often asked to tell the stories about the people I post and the interactions I have had running the blog. I had a lightbulb moment and decided that ah, maybe that is what I should do - tell the stories.
I thought about doing a podcast but I’m much better at writing than speaking (albeit I’m no Writer!) so I thought I’d give this a whirl.
Shortly after starting the Substack I realized it would be fun to send a weekly free newsletter talking about what I’ve posted to the blog, whatever random story I’m thinking about and giving copyright news and tips.
This will probably be a space that’s constantly evolving and I’m very open to suggestions!
Why subscribe?
Each week I will send out the subscribers only “Beyond the Blog” newsletter which I go over a past fauxtographer and tell not only the story about what they did but everything that went down which often doesn’t make the blog. I try (TRY) to keep the blog just to the images stolen but there’s SO much more that goes on.
You also will get access to the full archive of posts on the website.
Beyond that you will be doing your bit to keep the industry a little bit more honest by supporting me and the work I do here and on the blog!
Can’t afford it? Totally understand!
There is also free newsletters that go out once a week. You can share and spread the word too!
Thank you for visiting and THANK YOU for your support!
